Frequently Asked Questions

Reasons 100% Asphalt Reclamation should become a regular practice:

Do not remove - not visible - keep at top

Null according – not visible

IS ASPHALT RECYCLABLE?
100% ! it is actually the most recycled product in North America.
WHAT IS RAP?
RAP stands for reclaimed asphalt pavement. The asphalt plant industry uses this term loosely to describe the millings or crushed asphalt that they use, however it really applies to all reclaimed asphalt.
HOW DOES ASPHALT GET RECYCLED?
With Bagela, the crushing of old asphalt can be eliminated, as these units accept chunk asphalt. By properly reheating asphalt removed from roads, parking lots, driveways etc. Older material is tumbled and heated to reproduce a workable hot mix. Should rejuvenators be required, there are plenty available on the market.
WHAT ARE THE BENFITS OF USING 100% RECYCLED ASPHALT?
  • Reduces consumption of natural resources
  • Reduce use of oil
  • Reduces emissions
  • Eliminates the costs of crushing and cold mix products.
  • Saves product from entering landfills
  • Result in significant cost savings to the Municipality, Province or Contractor who provides it
HOW DOES RECYCLING ASPHALT AFFECT SUSTAINABILITY?
Compared to plant-produced hot mix, recycled HMA is very good for the environment in several different ways. Particularly, it helps reduce mining and quarrying, as well as oil consumption.

Re-use of asphalt keeps these natural resources out of the landfills.

In addition, asphalt recycling can dramatically reduce fuel consumption, use of transportation and machinery, carbon emissions, as well as labor costs.

IS RECYCLED ASPHALT DURABLE?
Studies show that in many applications, recycled content actually creates a stronger, longer lasting material. The result extends the lifespan of the pavement and reduces repaving/maintenance requirements, and thus lowering long-term costs. Correctly recycled asphalt performs nearly the same as asphalt from a plant.
WHAT IS THE LIFE EXPECTANCY OF RECYCLED HOT MIX?
Overall the results are more or less the same as plant-provided HMA
WHAT ARE PROJECTED COST SAVINGS BY RECYCLING ASPHALT?
Savings achieved are as much as 90% from the cost of purchasing plant-produced HMA. There is a wide range of actual dollar figure for savings as there is a wide range of asphalt pricing across North America., and how much users buy in a year.

Of note, recycling eliminates the costs of dumping old asphalt, cost of crushing, and fuel and trucking costs are reduced. The big one eliminated is the very high costs of cold mix products, which also eliminates having to send crews back to every site to redo the project with hot mix.
